Why a trip runs well, or does not

Nothing below is a promise about how you will feel. They are the four mechanical things that decide whether a trip in this region works, and what we do about each one.

We hold the ground contracts ourselves

Vehicles, guides and boat charters in all three countries are contracted by us, not resold from a wholesaler. When a road closes in Ha Giang, the person moving your car works in our office.

Twelve travellers, and it is a hard cap

Above twelve you stop fitting in one boat, one restaurant table and one guide's voice. Our set departures stop at twelve and we do not add a thirteenth for a booking.

Quotes are itemised at supplier level

Hotel per night, vehicle per day, guide per day, cruise per night, domestic flights at cost. You can see which line makes your trip expensive, and change that line instead of the whole trip.

One planner from enquiry to last transfer

The person who writes your itinerary is the person you message from Luang Prabang at 21:00. No handover to an operations desk after payment.

Land costs only, per person, two sharing, excluding international flights. This is the honest working range rather than a headline number — the pricing page breaks it down line by line.

Read this before comparing

Two quotes for the same route can differ by a quarter without either being dishonest. Group size, how many guide days are included, and whether domestic flights are quoted at cost or marked up account for most of that gap.

How planning actually goes

01
You write, we read properly
Dates, rough length, who is travelling, what you refuse to miss. A paragraph is enough.

First outline in two working days
A route and a price range — not a brochure. Most people change something at this point, which is the idea.

We tighten it together
Usually two or three rounds over a week. Hotels named, drive times checked, costs moved where you want them.

Deposit, then the details
Thirty per cent holds the trip. Balance thirty days before arrival.
05
On the ground
One number in country, answered by someone who knows your itinerary, for the whole trip.

Who we are not right for

Four kinds of trips we turn down, regularly, because someone else does them better.

Groups above twelve. Coach groups need a different operation and a different price structure, and we do not run one.
Budgets under about USD 120 per person per day on land. Below that the only lever left is cutting guide days, and the trip stops being worth the airfare.
Trips where nobody in the party wants a guide. If you want to move alone, a good hotel and a rail booking will serve you better than us.
Languages other than English and French. We do not pretend to have a German or Japanese-speaking guide team and then find one on the day.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Do you sell tours directly, or only through agents?

Both. Individual travellers book with us directly, and we also handle ground arrangements for a small number of overseas agents. The price you see quoted is the direct price.

Can a trip cover all three countries in two weeks?

It can, and we run exactly that as a fifteen-day route. Under fourteen days we would rather you did two countries well. Three countries in ten days is four internal flights and very little else.

How far ahead should I book?

For travel between November and March, three to five months. Outside that window six to eight weeks is usually enough, except around Tet, when hotels and domestic flights in Vietnam sell out early and prices rise sharply.

Are your prices in USD binding?

The quote is binding once you accept it and pay the deposit, apart from government fees and domestic airfares, which we pass through at cost and reconcile before final payment.
